"I've never tried a rotation battle!" Zac said, flush with excitement and Summer sun. "Guess you'll be the mentor today."
He followed Razz's lead, sending out three Pokemon. To one side was Vern, the Summer Sawsbuck, replete with his newly malted coat and a sandy ruff. In the center was O'Malley the Lurantis. He was as green as an underripe lime, and twice as zesty. The great mantis slid one claw along the other, slivering the air with the shriek of peeling carapace. "Hey! Stop that!" Zac said, wincing at the sound.
And on the other side was Bulu. Zac hadn't sent him out like the others. Instead he had been here before Zac and Razz arrived, lounging in a grove of freshly grown palms. "Ready Bulu? Time for a bit of exercise!" Zac said, clapping his hands together and rubbing them in anticipation.
Bulu closed its eyes.
"Well Razz, I'm ready when you are. Hit me!"

"Sounds pretty good to me!" Zac said, looking at his team. Their moves and typing had a lot of synergy, but the trio didn't have any experience working together. "Vern! Let's crank up the sunlight!" Zac said, and Sawsbuck used Sunny Day. The already blazing summer sun beat down on the field, baking the sands into burning dunes, and making Zac sweat through his Alolan shirt. He pulled two Charja-Colas from his bag and offered one to Razz.

Zeraora bolted towards Lurantis, and it was all the insect could do to take the hit on their crossed scythes. O'Malley was pushed back in the sand, with weak electricity crackling over their carapace. Before he could counter attack the lightning zipped back across the field, and Zeraora and Decidueye switched places.

The burning sun was getting in Tapu Bulu's eyes. The legendary snorted in annoyance, and his Grassy Terrain rippled outwards. First, thin beach grass carpeted the field, followed by the emergence of dozens of shady palm trees. In moments, what had been waves of sand had been replaced by a pleasing beach oasis.

O'Malley prowled between the woody plants, stalking Link. He melded with the foliage, counting on his unusual green coloration to keep him hidden. Sensing an opening, he struck, he lunged at Link with a scything Superpower.

"Why the hell would you let them drink Zapsi!" Zac said, alarmed. He turned away from the battle, so that his heart was pointed directly at the young, impressionable ranger. "Listen mate, lots of these drinks have negative side effects on Pokemon. Charja-Cola is the ONLY drink that is free from the dangerous preservatives used by the big cola companies. Zapsi and Dr. Pika have a long history of using unsafe chemicals that can distort and damage the bodies of your lovely Pokemon." Zac said, gesturing strongly in the direction of the ongoing fight.

"Charja-Cola, on the other hand, uses natural preservatives derived from berries and Exeggutor sap, the long term effects of which are not even known to science! Just think about the potential!" He said, grinning. Zac cracked open his own can and drank half of it in one swallow. "Now THAT hits the spot. And with 157% of your daily recommended intake of Niacin, Thiamine, and even Hydroxycobalamin, it's not hard to see why!"

Zac fixed Razz with a mentorly gaze. "Razz, did you know that Charja-Cola contains Rare Candy extract? It's the only sports cola that has been Flab tested. That's right! The Flabebe we tested it on all reached max level after barely two doses! It's astounding what this drink does to your body! So do you want your Pokemon guzzling down dangerous soda? Or do you want to be powering them up with intense, delicious, refreshing and now-legal Charja-Cola!"

"You can't be poisoning them with Zapsi," Zac said earnestly, his brow creased in worry. "You've gotta be poisoning them with Charja-Cola."

"Poisons are not only natural, but crucial for human development!" Zac said passionately, the battle now entirely forgotten. "Both alcohol and coffee are poisonous in large doses, or to most Pokemon. Hell, coffee is produced by plants to kill insects! But in smaller doses, both alcohol and caffeine can be easily consumed by humans. They've caused cultural revolutions!"

"Every major civilization throughout history and pre-history that figured out fermentation immediately had a boom of art and culture. It unlocks the mind and removes inhibitions, leaving you free to create! There's no alcohol in Charja-Cola, obviously, but it's absolutely chocked full of caffeine!" Zac emphasized his point by cracking open another can of Charja-Cola and drinking half of it in one go. His body shuddered with barely-contained energy. "Caffeine was the catalyst for the Enlightenment, Razz! Without it Kalos and Galar would be shadows of their current selves. Still stuck in the Dark Ages! It's a better alcohol. It focusses and energizes, and it removes the need for sleep, which is something I'm particularly happy about." 

"Oh I'm getting plenty of sleep mate," Zac assured his mentee. "Because of the bond with Bulu I can hardly stop sleeping! I swear, if I do much as sit down I can feel the pull of sleep. I get an easy eight hours a night, and another two or three during the day." He looked over at the snoozing bull. Tapu Bulu seemed unfazed by the battle that had been going on around it. Whether paused or ongoing, the legendary snoozed on. "I'm pretty much immune to coffee at this point. The only thing that keeps me awake these days is Charja-Cola!" Zac said, tapping the empty can with a finger.

Zac noticing that the battle had paused while he went on about his favorite drink, and gave an embarrassed laugh. "You didn't need to stop on my account, but I appreciate it. Okay, let's get this battle going again!" 

Link resumed his attack, but Lurantis had taken the opportunity to blend back into the foliage. Grassy Terrain hadn't weakened either, but multiplied. Their arena had become a veritable slice of jungle! O'Malley, from his hiding place in the branches, called up a ]Leaf Storm. 

The palm leaves stirred, then flapped, and then tore free of their trees, swirling and slashing in a hurricane of greenery. They tore at every Pokemon on the field, slashing ineffectively at Bulu, but cutting into Vern's thin summer coat. The Sawsbuck let out a bray of pain and annoyance.

"Similar to what?" Zac asked, noticing Salem's signing. The cat would know from the Urban Biome Contest that Zac could sign passably, is a bit slowly. "Oh that reminds me Razz, I enjoyed your sneaky appearance!"

In the battle, things were going badly. The Leaf Storm had sharpened Lurantis' blades and increased his predatorial prowess, but sometimes there is just a better hunter. Link appeared through the phantom portal and struck O'Malley, knocking him out with a brutal, well-placed strike. The leaves blowing through the forest shuddered and spun down, forming a thick layer on the ground.

"Ah damn! Well I guess I can't send in the sleeping one," Zac said, "go Vern!"

But Vern had just seen O'Malley get bodied in a single shot. Granted, the mantis was a grass canon, but Vern wanted nothing to do with the terrifying owl on the other team. Vern galloped over to Tapu Bulu, and shook its antlers above the sleeping legendary. Wriggling seeds fell onto Bulu, worming their way into the wooden cracks in his form.

Bulu scratched its tummy. Then its neck. He frowned in its sleep, rolled over, and scratched again. Then it opened one eye. "Buuuuuu"
The legendary scratched, stood up, and slammed its back against one of the trees, toppling it in an effort to get the seeds free. "BUUUUUUUUUUUU!" Bulu cast around furiously, searching for the culprit. The foolish creature that would dare to disturb its naptime. 

Its ire fell on Link. Ire that fanned to rage, and then to complete, red-eyes fury. It snorted a cloud of steam and spores, before ripping up the palm tree it had bent. Bulu held the crooked tree in one, clanging hand, and with a shuddering battle cry that Zac felt all through his body, Bulu charged Link. 

"BUUUUUUUUULUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!"

Bulu's tree slamming into the archer, and the legendary let out a roar of victory before its shadow pulled tight, pinning the raging bull to a single spot in the undergrowth. The roar turned sour, and he swung for the oncoming Whis, only to miss as the trees around him starting to shrink and wither.

BUUUUUUU!

Whis's attack connected, pummeling Bulu's wooden body with electrified fists. Bulu went to gore the cat before tossing the tree club at him. All the time, the foliage around Bulu had begun to wilt into mush. The legendary's perpetual Grassy Terrain had been replaced by Insomnia, and the magical greenery was fading. 

With a groan like a timbering tree, Bulu crunched down onto the leafy sand, before falling sideways. 

"I think he's trying to fall asleep again," Zac said, looking over at the distressed legendary. "You alright buddy?" he asked. Bulu responded with a gruff snort. He was not alright. "Well, that looks like the end of it. Nice work mate!" Zac said, shaking Razz's hand.
